"Taklagsfest": Topping Out Celebration

In days gone by, Swedes had the commendable custom of helping their neighbors build their homes. When the roof was completed, the home owners would treat their helpers to a hearty meal --including copious amounts of beer -- called a taklagsfest. (Read more about "topping out" traditions here.)

We decided to show our appreciation to our hard-working and conscientious builders today, on the completion of our roof (apart from the tiles), with homemade pizza, cake, and, well, mineral water! The gesture was very well appreciated. Good thing they finished just before the Dormition Fast!

Only 10 days ago (8 working days) they poured the concrete slab, so we find it quite extraordinary that they have come so far so quickly, despite the heat wave and a series of unpredictable and heavy rain storms. Now with the roof completely covered, we no longer have to worry about removing pools of water from the building once or twice a day. One of our workers left today with the words: "I can sleep well tonight!"

Once again, you can follow the daily progress of the work on our photo gallery.
